How do you guys clean your exhaust manifold?

Hey guys i have an 04 golf and just took egr valve off to clean as it was PACKED - with gas it came right off in a matter of minutes; my question is can i pour diesel fuel and brush the inside of the manifold while its on the car? seems like the bolts are extremely hard to reach; any input needed please
