I replaced my starter motor today. The previous owner gave me a bunch of VW parts and among them was a starter motor. I lubed up the innards and took it to Autozone. It bench tested successful. When I put it in, it still grinds but not as loud. When I try to start the second time, the engine always turns over.
Are there any possibilities other than the ring gear on the flywheel having a weak point or points? I don't mind the grinding noise, I just don't want to get stranded somewhere. I've heard about some people lubricating the output shaft with grease, but I know that's not going to be a permanent fix.
