Camshaft Timing?

I have a new head with new valves, new camshaft, lifters, valve stem seals, etc on my 1997 Jetta Tdi. Do I need to set camshaft timing? Right now, the car runs just fine. I have other diesel vehicles and it idles like a diesel (I don't have a point of reference for other 1Z TDIs). There is a bit of smoke when I start it cold without the glow plugs. If I need to set cam timing, can anyone point me to what I should be looking for in VCDS Lite and how I can tell whether mine is advanced or retarded?
