Serpentine belt shredded, compressor will not turn

mercredi 14 juin 2017

Stranded on the side of the road today.

Serpentine belt was shredded. Lost A/C, power steering, and alternator function -- car and A/C were working up until that point. The wheel on the belt tensioner was reduced to sharp fragments. Figure that's what gave out and broke the belt. It was OEM, car is 2004 with BEW engine and 260k miles.

Replaced the A/C compressor and clutch about 18 months ago. Worked fine up until today. I am unable to turn the compressor motor by hand.

Replaced belt tensioner pulley assembly and serpentine belt. Turned on the car and belt smoked when the compressor would not spin.

Will test with a multimeter tomorrow for resistance at clutch connector and for +12v connectivity. The clutch appeared visually rusty. Unsure of a piece of the original belt got stuck between the compressor and clutch and seized it, but figure that is unlikely.

If the compressor is receiving +12v and has a resistance between 3-5 Ohms, would it narrow the issue to the clutch? Saw that the clutch may be able to be replaced without having to mess with the refrigerant.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!
