2015 TDI Hardware upgrade - any downsides?

mercredi 7 juin 2017

So I find myself tempted to stay on the TDI bandwagon and trade my '13 golf for a new 2015 TDI sportwagon. I love my golf but the buyback is still looming in the back of my mind.

I know the 2015 gen 3 have had the software upgrade but that they will also require a hardware upgrade within the next year. I'm having a tough time finding out what that hardware upgrade is and whether it will have any impact on fuel economy or performance.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tires?

It's time for me to replace the factory Hankook Optimo tires. These HanKook tires were to noise for me.

I'm looking for a quite, smooth riding and great gas mileage tire.

I'm looking at these three:
Michelin Premier A/S
Continental Truecontact
Pirelli Cintureto P7

What all do you recommend?

Suggestions for broken-down, low-mileage 1999 TDI

Hello, all -

I'm the son of someone in Southern Ontario who owns a 1999 TDI with relatively low mileage (126,000 KM). My mum can't drive the car anymore, due to her illness, and although it's been useful for myself and the caregivers to have around for errands and ferrying her to the doctor, we're now at a point where the car needs significant work just to be road-worthy: probably new front struts, definitely new front shocks (according to the local Canadian Tire, about $1800 worth of work).

The engine is still in great shape; the body is in the shape you'd expect of a VW that has lived in Southern Ontario winters for 18 years: ugly, but still in one piece. My question for the experts is: what to do with this fading beauty? We'd like to give the parts that still work continued life, but are reluctant to put nearly $2K into a car with less than half that much in "blue book value." Is there a market for this car for parts? Or should it just be donated to charity as-is?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Will delaying stage 2 result in a longer warranty?

based on the brochure text below, I think the best practice, which EVERY customer should do ,is defer stage 2 until the DAY before 11 years or a single mile before 162k. result: 5 more years/60k more miles... stretching things to 212k or 16 years! I haven't seen this discussed here before but I'd consider it a huge advantage.

However, if customer wanted to self assume some risk in having a warranty gap, could they exceed the 11y or 162k, and THEN still get stage 2 done for free many many miles or years later? thereby reinstating warranty for another 5yr/60k.

Brochure says this: Warranty Period The warranty period for the “Extended Emissions Warranty” limited warranty extension shall be the greater of

- 11 years or 162,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s original in-service date;

OR

- 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date and mileage of Phase 1 of the emissions modification. At the time of the subsequent Phase 2 modification, the extended warranty will be honored for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date and mileage of the completion of Phase 2.

Calling Any Euro ALH or ASV owners! Looking for ECU Pin info

Hello There,

I am in the process of performing an ALH swap into an 86 Golf Westy. I am building my wiring harness and I am planning on using ASV maps/software in my 03 American ALH ECU. I am in need of some help. I am trying to figure out if the European ASV/ALH ECU came with a white/blue wire that goes from the ECU Pin 24 to T10w/10. Or maybe T10d/10 (Green connector for the earlier cars). I am looking for voltage while the car is running at idle. If there is not a wire coming from the pin on either of those plugs. Can someone check for voltage at the ECU pin 24 its self? I am looking at using this pin as my MIL light for my swap as per this thread.

Link for any interested in taking a look at my build thread.

Cheers!
Justin

Got my 2015 SEL yesterday

Same dealer, same long drive home as when I bought the Evil Beetle.

No big surprises about the car, since my daughter bought a 2017 gasser a couple of months ago. Getting used to the slightly odd ergonomics. (Never had a car with a steering wheel that doesn't point at the driver's seat before. ***?)

Also getting use to my first dual-clutch transmission. It's also slightly odd, but since I know what it is and how it works there is nothing surprising.

Definitely a nice, solid car. I've been driving a 2015 Ford F-150 crew cab 4x4 with the 2.7 Ecoboost, which I loved more than a human baby, but couldn't justify the expense for a daily driver. For as often as I actually need a truck I can rent one from Home Depot. Sucks, because that is THE best truck I've ever owned. Fantastic in every way. Quick, quiet, comfortable, and a lifetime average of 23 mpg.

Wait....is this a Ford ad? Sorry. Anyway, happy to have a TDI again. Especially one as loaded to the gills as you could get in 2015.

I don't know exactly which TDI Jail this one was sitting in for 2 years, but it's a previously untitled 2015 with 2700 miles on the odometer. Wherever it was, it was DUSTY. The engine compartment looks like something that was sitting in Norman Bates' attic for 50 years, but that'll rinse off. The windshield is cracked, so they're replacing that on Friday. Dried up leaves and crap have blown under the hood, too. Poor thing. But it registers as "new", and has the extended TDI warranty, so I'm fine with it.

Not looking forward to that first timing belt change, but at least I have all the tools. :D
