Air in fuel line after sitting for several hours

lundi 17 juillet 2017

This is on a 2001 ALH

When I drive my car several times during the day, I never have any problems starting it, and it runs great.

If I let the car sit overnight, or for 6-8 hours during the day, I get a significant amount of air in the clear fuel line in the engine bay. I can get the car to start after some long cranking to prime the system, but obviously I don't want to do that too often and wreck other stuff.

I noticed some fuel pooling under the #2 injector (second from left when looking at front of engine) so I sprayed everything down with brake clean so I can hopefully pinpoint the locating of the leak. But after cleaning I didn't notice any fuel leaking right away, so wherever the leak is, it seems to be pretty slow.

Finally, I also did the soapy water test to see if there was pressurized air leaking out anywhere, and the only place i saw it was on the small fitting below the injector on the #3 cylinder around the hex head.

So I am wondering a couple things.

Where are the likely sources of air getting into the system?

I am thinking it is in between the fuel filter and the injectors, because in my mind if it was a leak somewhere between the filter and the tank, I would be getting air bubbles while it was running as well.

What is the hex head fitting that is leaking?

It isn't the fuel injector, but just below it, and there is one for each cylinder.
It appears to be a sensor of some kind because it appears to connect to a wiring harness instead of a hose of some kind. I don't know what its called so I can't search to see how to fix it, and I haven't found a picture of it yet in my bentley manual.
