Was driving B4 sedan home on 8 hour trip through the hills of West Virginia when the engine felt like it went into limp mode cresting a hill. Started up next hill with tail of grey smoke (burning oil) and no power (3rd gear at 30 mph), had car towed home.
Found that there is lots of blowby when the oil filler cap is off (lots of pressure). Decided to check compression and found #1 500 psi #2 about 100 psi. I did not check #3 or 4 because of trouble removing fuel lines and replacing them to get compression. Question would head gasket cause major blowby or is there a more serious problem like valve through piston?
Spent lots of time and money on car replacing worn part at 300,000 miles and thought I would have good little car to run another 150,000 miles with little trouble. Had injection pump rebuilt at Bosch dealer, installed larger injectors (balance and pop test at Bosch), rebuilt turbo, had crank stout resurfaced, rebuilt head from Frank, and most internal engine parts replaced.
Seemed to be getting along great until last month. Brought new car for replacement.
What has me questioning the head gasket is last year the upper radiator flange into engine broke off when I was going to work. Did not notice any change in the temperature gauge and I'm not sure if engine got hot or not. Another thing that happen this winter was that car started to miss and smoke when it was ran hard and engine was cold. After a mile or two engine went to running like there were no problems, could this be when valve broke? But why would it run fine for 4 months?
Thanks,
Gene
