Thermostat is bad already?

How long should an engine thermostat last?

It was last done in Sept. 16, 2014, when the BSM delete was done by A-nut in Golden, CO. Mileage at that point was 87,886 mi. Yet, I don't see on the receipt anything about the thermostat housing being replaced then too. I'm wondering why he didn't, since so many people here say it should be. It's only been 33 months since the thermostat was replaced. Could it really be due again, after only 18,245 miles?

So, this is how I know it's the thermostat:
Last Friday, I got a waring phrase pop up on my dash saying Emissions! (or something like that) along with a long beep and the engine icon light too. Since I was very close, I pulled into my local indy VW auto repair shop and had Verner put his code reader on it. He said it came back as thermostat, but he didn't give me the code # before he cleared it. We had a discussion about how critical it was to do, and the cost, and he said it's pretty important. Don't want the engine to overheat or run too cold. Too cold and it wastes fuel. Too hot, and it overheats. Ok, I got it. He then said it was too late to do anything about it that day, but I should call on Monday to schedule it. AND don't drive it too much over the weekend if I can help it, certainly don't go out of town; don't even drive it to Denver or Ft. Collins, because I don't want to breakdown on the highway (so true). Towing it back to Vern's shop could be expensive, but I think my insurance actually covers towing. I didn't have plans to go out of town anyway.

Saturday, I stayed in town, maybe drove it a total of 15 miles. The warnings didn't come back on. However, today, Sunday, they did. It happened first thing in the morning as I headed to my daughter's apartment (6 miles away). When I came home later, I checked Bora's prices on the parts (not sure which thermostat I'll get yet), because his are often cheaper than what Vern charges. Vern doesn't mind if I get my own parts to save some $ either.

I'm kind'uv  about having to spend $200+ for something that was done not so long ago. Is it normal to have to replace the thermostat again so soon? Could the lack of replacing the housing for it be the culprit?
