Hello everyone,
My son's 2001 Jetta TDi automatic is driving me nuts. It gets P0402 (excessive EGR flow) and P0234 (overboost) consistently (almost every drive cycle), once in a while P1538 (the shutdown solenoid), transmission torque converter clutch solenoid, glow plug circuit A, and, this is the best one yet, P3003 coolant glowplug preheater code (the car is a automatic, it doesn't have coolant preheater glowplugs!!).
The freezeframe data on my OBD2 reader always shows 0 RPM and 0 MPH for time of occurrence, MAF 3.39 lbs/min (this strikes me as strange for an engine not running), TPS 29.41% (that's odd for an engine not running??), which results in a calculated load of of 36.47% (Hmmm...engine not running??). Spark advance, IAT and MAP all indicate ambient (engine not running conditions.
So I started working on it.
- Checked for vacuum leaks, none (with a vacuum tester)
- Turbo actuator works, correct travel, reasonably smooth motion
- Boost and EGR solenoids swapped with my code free 2002 TDI
- Grounds under battery cleaned (they were bad, but no change)
- ECU re racked, and grounds cleaned (ground stud in front of ECU were terrible, but no change)
- MAF swapped with my known good one
The car has a cheap boost gauge installed, max momentary is 18 to 20 psi, sustained is 14 or so psi. It is cheap, so it may not be really accurate, but based on those numbers, it shouldn't trip a code for overboost.
Still to do: Swap throttle position sensor (accelerator pedal), and boost sensor, both will be from my code free 2002 Golf TDI.
I am beginning to think I may have a bad ECU?
I don't have vag-com, but can barrow one - how would I tell with a vag-com if the ECU is bad?
The part that is really killing me is the freeze frame data....all these codes come at 0 RPM and 0 MPH.
Is this happening when the ECU gets powered up??
Anybody ever had this before?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

OBD2 codes with very strange freeze frame data
