2005 Jetta TDI BRM
A few days ago I replaced the flywheel / clutch disc / pressure plate / release bearing as a set (Luk 17-050). After hooking everything back up, the starter wouldn't run. I thought the problem was the ground, but it was that the clutch engage switch on the clutch master wasn't switching. Further examination reveals that the clutch pedal is not going all the way down, at least not easily. It goes down until there's about an inch left, which is not far enough to trip the clutch engage switch. The additional inch can be reached if I press the clutch pedal much harder, at which point the switch trips, and the starter starts. It's as if there's a step on the clutch pedal travel. It seems like something is in the way. I thought I was catching the car mat under the pedal, until I studied the condition more closely. I don't have to press the clutch all the way to shift. Shifting is smooth.
My question: Any idea what causes this hard lower inch on the clutch pedal? I would hate to have to pull the transmission again to check the release bearing fork. I could leave it like this, but I'm afraid I'm straining something and will end up breaking it.
