I did a search and didn't find this mentioned anywhere so I thought I would share my experience. I have (2)2002 Jetta TDI wagons both of which are automatics - the dreaded 01m. In both cars the little black strip that goes in the slot of the shifter was worn. One of them was broken into pieces, the other was just cracking but had not totally broken apart. I replaced the one that was broken apart first. For that, I pulled the whole center armrest and trim, etc... After getting a good look at how everything was assembled, I thought I might be able to replace that trim strip without the full disassembly of the center armrest and trim on the second car. I was correct. I just replaced the second one and the job took about 15 minutes. If your trim strip is already fallen apart, you might have to pull everything apart to get all the broken pieces removed but if your strip is just cracked, this is a much easier way. Here's the process I used.
Place the shifter into Neutral. Push down on the bottom chrome trim piece below the shift knob. Next press the button in firmly and pull up HARD. The shift knob will pop off.

Once the knob is off, remove the bottom chrome piece. Then use a very small flat head screwdriver and insert it to the side of the chrome bezel by squishing the rubber gasket a bit to the side as shown.

There are two little tabs on each side of the chrome bezel that stick out to the sides. Those little tabs are held in place by the black plastic piece below. In the pic above you can just barely see one of the tabs under the screwdriver. Here are a couple stolen pics that should make it more clear how everything is held in place.

The little tabs in the chrome piece are held in place by the black plastic piece where it kind of wraps around the bottom of the chrome piece. You need to use the little screwdriver to push the black plastic away from the chrome tabs so that the two tabs on one side of the chrome piece are released at the same time. It helps to pull up on the chrome piece at the same time. Once both tabs are released on the one side you can lift the chrome piece up on that side and move it a bit more to that side to release the two tabs on the other side. You can then take care to guide it out past the rubber side seal. Once the chrome piece is out, you can use the screwdriver again to move the *same* tabs outwards until the lower parts of the black plastic piece are released where they are held in by tabs on the shifter base - refer to the pic above. You can then pull the black piece out in a similar manner. You can push the console a bit this way or that to get a little extra clearance for the tabs as they go through the rubber seal. It's a tight fit but fairly easily done without damaging anything. Once that black plastic piece is removed, you have easy access to the trim strip. Just lift it out, place the new one in and reassemble everything like it was.
