Hello!
I have a Golf 4 from 2001 with a 1,9 TDi (90 hp) engine. It has almost 380000 km on it (~236000 miles) which is a bit but its still going strong - except for this fault Im about to tell you about..
Recently I have experienced that my car loses performance/power at some point during trips. I will start out my trip with normal power, driving on the highway for like 130 km, then suddenly the car loses power - my uneducated guess is that the turbo stops working. I have noticed it twice during acceleration on the highway from 90 km/t to 110 km/t - at some point during this acceleration I can feel something turn off and then the performance is gone, for the rest of the ride, I think.
I have experienced it 4 times now (where I noticed it atleast) within a couple of weeks, and all of the times I had been driving on an highway for an extended period of time, just cruising at a constant speed (using speed pilot).
When the fault occurs, when I accelerate, I can hear/feel the engine trying to pull but nothing happens at all, it will take like 5 seconds to accelerate from 110 km/h to 115 km/h (in 5th gear, have tried both full throttle and lighter press on the pedal). It also feels like the engine wont go over a certain RPM when the error is there, like 3000 RPM (maybe it will go higher but its just really slow)? If I go into 4th gear the RPMs will rise by the expected amount but then the performance is still terrible (so the car can go above 3k RPM).
During the error I seem to get the same mpg (km/l in this case) as I do with power, that is once I get to a certain speed, but acceleration is awfully slow. Turning the car off and on again fixes it (it did the few times I have tried it atleast). No engine/error lights come on in the dashboard when the error is there and the engine doesnt get too hot by reading the temperature gauge. I havent noticed that any smoke comes out when I step on the pedal when the fault is there.
So the fault occurs after some time has passed and can be fixed by restarting the car. At first I thought it was maybe a mechanical problem like engine getting too hot or the turbo getting too hot..? But since it starts working instantly after a restart of the engine, I am more worried that it might be computer/sensor related?
I have tried doing some research and I have seen people saying it could be the MAF sensor, the turbo or an actuator rod? But then I found this site and wanted to hear what you had to say before I go and do anything? I dont know when the air filter was last changed, will do it ASAP - could this do anything? Could the MAF sensor have been damaged if the air filter is old?
Another side-note is that overall since I got the car, I always felt it was slow, like turbo-lag but really bad, turbo only really engages at around 3000 RPM? This is my first turbo diesel so I dont know what to expect but to me it feels slow. Is this normal for a TDi or a symptom of something wrong, already back then?
Kind regards, Nicklas
