My '05 Passat sedan has only 64,500 miles and is completely stock -- except I did a preventative balance shaft delete in January 2017 at 61,500 miles.
I checked the EGR valve today and wow, it had a lot of crud in it. It had never been removed and cleaned before now (i'm the original owner). The need to clean it just slipped through the cracks. Not any more. I'm going to check it and clean every 20,000 miles tops. It only takes a few minutes to remove it and cleaning is a piece of cake with simple tools and a quick vacuum of the intake to pick up loose pieces.
I do a lot of short trips in town and cold starts, that might be contributing to build-up, not sure.
