AHU TDI Cabriolet Clipper Hot Rod Build.

As this swap nears completion, it was time to get online and do the write up before I forget :) I have a habit of taking a bunch of photos, never making the thread then by the time I make time I can't remember the details. Then even worse, 2 years later I have to do the same job, can't find the photos if I had to change phones, or can't make sense of the ones I can find, LOL. Photos hosted on my 15+ year old Photobucket account, only way I will lose this information now is if TDIClub AND Vortex goes away, or Photobucket goes away.

So I have done a few later model engine swaps for my own stuff as well as helped out some others. A good while ago now, I was approached about doing a MK3 AHU swap into a Cabriolet. Having so much going on in my work life as well as trying to get projects of my own done, there just wasn't the time even though it did seem like an interesting twist of a challenge, doing a diesel swap into a gasser, where theres no drop in tank/filler solution. Plus it just seemed cool. Since I could find very little information on the swap into a Cabriolet, and some of what I found being not what I would consider the way to go about it, I decided to make a thread to document from beginning to end.
The Cabriolet is a family passed down 1988, that is amazingly original and in great condition. The paint is absolutely baked, the top needs replaced, and because of the top the seats are stained, but its all minor stuff. The car has absolutely zero rust, barely any dings. There were a few events that happened that took the car off the road though. One, there was an attempt to steal it, and the theives hacked up the ignition harness to hotwire the car. Im still unsure how they drove it(not very far) because the ignition lock cylinder was still in good shape. THe owner temporarily got it going again by cobbling in a toggle switch and a push button, but the transmission went out shortly after. Driving the car a short distance, I dont have a clue whats going on in there, but it sounds nasty!! The engine ran, but not great, even though it only has 66K Miles.
So thats what prompted the swap idea. He considered a VR, but everyone seems to have a VR Mk1 these days. So he decided to do something a little different, atleast for a Cabriolet. A turned up TDI! He located a 98 Jetta with only 130K on the clock that seemed to run perfect. Donor car in hand, they sat in his barn until mid April 2017, when they came to my place.

First order of business was stripping what we needed out of the donor..
Useless Junk...
