intermittent hard start vw golf mark 5

Hi
What an excellent resource! However , I have not yet found a situation posted exactly like mine. Apologies if I have missed it. I have a 2007 VW golf Mark5 which has given me good service but last 6 months or more have had a very intermittent hard start. After 15 seconds or more of cranking with dash lights on including glow plug light it will chug and then fire. It will then start and run fine for the remainder of the day. Occasionally it will almost fire at first key turn of the morning, then not. I have had it to a few mechanics but all tests fine as they have it when it happens to be starting! It has been serviced as per book and the cylinder head was replaced after a comedy of errors when a mechanic tried to replace cam and crank sensor and dropped a rubber boot into the crankcase causing timing belt shift and bent valves etc. etc. After returning a fault code for ignition switch D terminal intermittent problem in circuit, I replaced the ignition switch, but problem not fixed. I also replaced the starter relay in the fuse box under the hood. I replaced the fuel filter and the lift pump recently and it immediately started, only for the problem to return several days later.I confirmed there was fuel coming out the line to the engine when key turned. I could not locate a anti-shutter valve or fuel shut off solenoid to test. I then suspected the check valve? in the fuel filter head after reading a post on the subject and bypassed the fuel filter. Still hard start with long cranking initially. I did notice what appears to be some leakage of fuel at the outlet from the engine / pump just before the temperature sensor. Could this be a clue? I am concerned further damage to the starting system may result and that my wife will lose patience with the car (which I otherwise love) and me (spending too much time trying to diagnose and fix). My thoughts are air leak, something with tandem pump? The car runs fine once it starts. Any comments or suggestions gratefully received and appreciated. HELP. I'm determined to sort it and feel it could be something simple.
