Getting back at it - 2002 Jetta ALH

I picked this car up last fall and ended up getting busy with work and never got beyond some basic troubleshooting.

Now I want to get this thing on the road and at the very least need to change the head gasket.

Does anyone know of a thread that's a good outline or a youtube video that I can view to give me some pointers and some familiarity with what I'm about to do?

If it turns out not to be a bent rod(s) it will at least be a gasket change, timing belt, turbo rebuild or replace, and water pump. Plus I am for sure going to discard the catalytic. And unless I can somehow determine how much life is left in the clutch I may just pull the engine anyways and change that too.

I do know that the original owner was pretty consistant in maintaining this vehicle at his VW dealership but most of the records are old enough to have been deleted. Some of this stuff may have already been done but if I can't tell once I get into it I might as well replace what I can now instead of possibly doing it twice.

Also, what is the EGR delete that I've seen several times perusing these forums? To me, simpler is usually better.
