97 AHU crank, no start... NOT THE RELAY!

Quick info: 97 AHU, ARP studs, 11mm pump, race 520 injectors, Malone 3+, EGR delete (Bought i t that way, not a mod of choice).

So it will crank and act like it WANTS to start- lumps for a quick second and spits some smoke out the back. Already checked the 109 relay, mine was bad so I replaced it with a brand new one and also checked with my pile of spare 109s from the junkyard. Relay has power, solenoid triggers, glow plug light goes on, stays on for a second, turns off.

Cracked the injectors open and cranked it- they're getting fuel, so it's not a fueling issue.

Starter isn't the strongest but it's been fine up until now. Still turns the sucker over easily.

What's next to check? If IP jumped timing? If the keyway on the crank sprocket is wallowed? I'm a Jeep guy so trying to figure out how to check the timing on a belt car is Greek to me. Any other suggestions of what to look for before I go off the deep end and start looking into timing?
