02j transmission ?

Have a 04 jetta w/manual 02j Tran. There is a small cover (3"x2") on the bottom with VW in raised letters, that is leaking.

First can I just unscrew the 2 bolts and remove it w/out something falling out?

Second what is it, and can I just replace a gasket to stop the leak.
