Flushing dog

I'm slowly bringing my wife around to the idea of us getting a hunting dog. Dad and I do a lot of quail and pheasant hunting and he's got a German short hair for pointing and I want to get a flusher because I'm tired of kicking bushes to get the birds to fly LOL. I know labs make good flushers but she would prefer not to have one. Spaniel's I'm told are good but I don't know much about the breed or flushing dogs in general. Any tips or books or suggestions? Thanks.
