First time AR buyer advice.

First off, let's use the KISS method. I know some of you are guru's. My dad is finally ready to pull the trigger on one. I probably will also. What should we look for in a gun just in case SHTF? I was thinking of one in 5.56 and one in .308. Any particular manufacturer to go with? I'm thinking around a grand for mine but I'm sure my dad will be more around $750. I have no interest/know how to build one, so off the shelf will have to do. Let me hear what your opinions are.
