97 12valve jasper reman, not sure how many miles on it, 196k on truck. 280hp work truck that doesnt get abused. stock convertor, UTF+type F for fluid, line pressure is typically 90-105 cruising around, or 140ish max wot 4th gear locked. i do have a lockup switch but rarely use it and am conservative with that, never below 1500 rpm.
this past winter i had a leaking hose drain the trans while driving. i changed filter and put new fluid maybe 5k mile ago. trans doesnt overheat.
on a recent 1000mile haul, i lost lockup but everything worked fine the whole way home, empty. one time during the return trip lockup came back, and worked great. the loss was on/off and not gradual or involving any slippage during TCC lock.
now im trouble shooting the issue and have verified that the PCM is grounding the TCC correctly at pin B11. since overdrive works and TCC is supplied 12v from the same source, im assuming the 12v supply to TCC solenoid is good. i pulled the pan just before leaving for family stuff today, and my filter has a lot of abrasive black grit on the outside. it looks like pepper, or fine black beauty sand blast.
what is this stuff? friction material from my convertor clutch or some other clutch/band inside the trans?
