Alternator not charging

vendredi 6 mars 2015

I'm posting this because I couldn't find my last thread on the issue, and to post the fix, which no-one mentioned in our previous discussions.

Complaint: intermittent charge (not complete failure) batteries were under charged.

Cause: damaged field coil inside alternator, damaged automatic shutdown relay.

The alternator failed completely after several months of other symptoms with low system voltage, lack of shifts from my auto trans, hard cold starts due to weak batteries.

I didn't get the ohm reading on the field coil, but I suspect that it damaged the relay contacts. I replaced the relay this morning and all is well.

I'm posting because it was mentioned several times that it was the battery temp sensor causing the PCM to under-excite. This was not the case with my truck. The temp (in centigrade) was always accurate.
